The enclosure was remodeled in the mid-18th century by military engineer Juan Martin Cermeo after it was severely damaged during the War of the Spanish Succession, which lasted from 1701 to 1714. Throughout its history, Montjuc Castle has been used to both defend and bombard Barcelona. The structure began to be used as a prison in the late nineteenth century. Llus Companys, the President of the Government of Catalonia, was murdered by firing squad there in 1940, and Franco erected a Military Museum within its walls in 1963, which remained open until 2009. Barcelona City Council now owns Montjuc Castle.

To visit Montjuc Castle, you must purchase a ticket, either public or reduced entry. Tickets can be purchased on-site at the ticket office or online at the Montjuc Castle official website. To avoid long waits, we recommend purchasing tickets online. The castle admission price includes entrance to both temporary and permanent exhibitions.
The Barcelona Magic Fountain performs a magnificent dancing fountain performance with music, water acrobatics, and light throughout the evenings. The Font Màgica Montjuc is one of Barcelona's most famous tourist sites for good reason (2.5 million visits per year, and the best part is that you can see the performance for free).
