The valley forms the two subdivisions of the Lahaul and Spiti districts of the state, one is named Kaza, and the other one is Kyelang.
Kaza is 3800 meters(12467 ft) above sea level and Kyelang is in the Lahaul valley. There is also a road that connects the two sub-divisions of the Lahaul and Spiti districts which are at a cut-off in winter and spring due to heavy snow there. As it is one of the tribal areas of the state, it is administered under the single-line administration system of Himachal Pradesh.
