Spiti Valley, located in the Indian state of Himachal Pradesh, is a very high-altitude valley in the Himalayas. It is located 4270 meters(14000 ft) above sea level. The valley lies in the north of Ladakh. Tibet lies to the east of Spiti Valley and Kinnaur in the southeast. The west of the valley is at Lahaul and the Kullu is at the south. Spiti Valley and its surrounding regions have a cold desert environment and are the least populated region of India. The valley forms the two subdivisions of the Lahaul and Spiti districts of the state, one is named Kaza, and the other is Kyelang.
Kaza is 3800 meters(12467 ft) above sea level, and Kyelang is in the Lahaul valley. There is also a road that connects the two subdivisions of the Lahaul and Spiti district,s which are at a cut-off in winter and spring due to heavy snow there. As it is one of the tribal areas of the state, it is administered under the single-line administration system of Himachal Pradesh. The single-line administration system facilitates direct communication between the Kaza administration and the higher-level administration system of Himachal Pradesh.

I went on the Spiti Valley in Winter tour with BanBanjara, and it was nothing short of magical. The snow-covered landscapes, frozen monasteries, and the silence of the valley made this one of the most serene trips of my life.
Yes, it was freezing — night temperatures dropped a lot! But the reward was worth it: the crisp winter air, bright blue skies, and snow-laden cliffs felt like another world.
Staying in local homestays was by far the best part of the tour. The hosts were warm, meals were cooked on wood stoves, and I felt I experienced Spiti like a local.
BanBanjara’s itinerary was very thoughtful — they took us via Shimla, factored in possible road closures, and made sure we had buffer days. The guides were experienced and kept us safe.
Visiting the ancient monasteries in such quiet, snow-clad surroundings felt deeply spiritual. It was both an adventure and a soulful retreat rolled into one.
This trip is challenging — very cold, long drives, and basic amenities at times. But if you are ready for that, it’s one of the most rewarding experiences you can have.
As a photographer, I was blown away. The frozen rivers, frosty villages, and stark mountains under winter light made for surreal shots. I can’t wait to go back with better lenses!
BanBanjara’s team handled transport, permits, and local arrangements very professionally. Even when weather changed, they kept us informed and flexible.
In winter, Spiti Valley has this deep, calm quiet that is different from touristy mountain places. It gave me a lot of time to reflect, rest, and just be present.
If you love offbeat winter adventures, this is for you. It’s not a luxury resort trip — but for someone who seeks raw beauty, solitude, and real Himalayan charm, BanBanjara’s Spiti Winter Tour is a gem.
