How to reach

By Air: 

➔ To reach the Valley of Flowers by air, you need to book a flight to the nearest airport, Jolly Grant Airport in Dehradun. 

➔ Several airlines offer regular flights to Dehradun from major cities in India. After arriving at Dehradun Airport, you can hire a taxi or take a pre-arranged transfer to reach Govindghat, the base camp for the Valley of Flowers trek. 

➔ From there, you can proceed on foot to explore the magnificent valley.

By Road:

➔ To reach the Valley of Flowers by road, you can start your journey from Haridwar, which is well-connected to major cities in India. 

➔ From Haridwar, hire a taxi or take a local bus to reach Govindghat, which serves as the base camp for the Valley of Flowers trek. 

➔ The distance between Haridwar and Govindghat is approximately 275 kilometers (171 miles). 

➔ The road journey takes around 9-10 hours, passing through scenic landscapes and picturesque towns along the way.

By Train:

➔ To reach the Valley of Flowers by train, you can first travel to Haridwar, which is well-connected to major cities in India. 

➔ From Haridwar, you can take a taxi or a local bus to reach Govindghat, the base camp for the Valley of Flowers trek. 

➔ The nearest railway station to Govindghat is Rishikesh, which is approximately 273 kilometers (170 miles) away. 

➔ From Rishikesh, you can hire a taxi or take a local bus to reach Govindghat, which takes around 9-10 hours.

Itinerary For Valley of Flowers Trek with Hemkund Sahib

1

Day 1 - Drive from Haridwar to Govindghat/Joshimath (285 km or 9 hours)

Haridwar

Pickup Location

  • Meet us at the Haridwar Railway station at 6 AM.
  • Your trek guide and fellow trekkers will assemble here. 
  • It is advisable to reach Haridwar a day earlier to avoid any delays. We start the uphill drive to Govind Ghat via Joshimath.
  • The drive will take up to 9-10 hours to complete. As you drive up the Bhagirath highway, with the Alaknanda River running alongside the way, you will start noticing the sharp bends in the road and the valley getting deeper and deeper.
  • Along the way, you will be crossing Devprayag. Here, the holy confluence of the Bhagirathi and Alaknanda Rivers happens which forms the River Ganges.
  • You will reach the base camp, perched at a height of 1,828 m (5,997 ft), late in the evening. After the long drive, rest for a while and acclimatize to the altitude. 
  • Grab your delicious dinner before heading to your hotel/homestay for the night.
  • Detailed Note: 
    The Valley of Flowers trek will start a little beyond Joshimath at a pilgrim village called Govind Ghat. So leave Rishikesh in the morning and travel along River Alakananda on the Badrinath highway. You do not need to carry food items with you as there are plenty of eateries on the way. You do not need to hire porters or mules on this trail. However, if you need one to carry your backpack, you can find one from Govindghat. BSNL is available in Govindghat. So make all your calls before you start the trek.

Day 2 - Govindghat/Joshimath to Ghangharia (13 km or 5-6 hours) | 9,600 ft

First Day Of Trek

  • Trek height is 6,300 ft to 9,600 ft via 7,200 ft
  • 4 km drive to Poolna and 5 to 6 hours trek, 8hr is the total time taken.
  • The trek gradient is easy-moderate.
  • Do not forget to carry water bottles. You can refill your water bottles at dhabas that you will find on the way.
  • Start the day early with a radiant sunrise and a gratifying breakfast!
  • After which, we start the uphill trek to Ghangaria, located at a height of 2926 m or 9600 ft.
  • The trek will take up to 5-6 hours to complete.
  • Enjoy the trek in the well-defined rocky trail. You will be walking alongside the Laxman Ganga River and green forests!
  • The initial path is motorable and usually crowded with Sikh pilgrims to the holy Hem Kund. The terrain of the trek remains a gradual incline throughout the day.
  • You will be trekking alongside the river most of the way until you cross it. After that point, the river will be out of sight. There are enough eateries and dhabas along the way, so there is no need to carry food for this day.
  • Upon reaching, you can rest and check-in at the hotel/guest-house. You will be given an energizing lunch at Ghangaria.
  • You can also head out into the town of Ghangaria for some exploration before calling it a day!
  • Enjoy dinner at the hotel as you prepare for your next day!
  • Detailed Note:  You can reach Poolna by road, and the distance is 9 kilometres. Kick start the ride to Poolna in a cab for four kilometres. The trail is well designed and clean and is usually full of Sikh pilgrims walking up and down. The trial is truly a heartening and encouraging sight.
  • The complete trek from Poolna to Ghangria is along the river. The path is alternately bright and shaded. At the midpoint of the day’s trek, you have to cross the river and go to the other bank. To have food, you can stop by any roadside Dhaba.
  • It took around 5-6 hours to complete the trek. And when you close to Ghangria, you can see a tabular land. Ghangria has a helipad and many camping spaces. The street village of Ghangria, near the helipad, is lined with hotels, restaurants. There is also a Gurudwara. and offers free accommodation and food.

Day 3 - Ghangharia to Valley of Flowers and back (4 km - one way) | 6 hours | 11,500 ft

The Trek To Valley of Flowers

  • Trek height is 9,600 ft to 11,500 ft and back
  • The trek will take around 6-7 hours and has 3.7 km each way
  • The trek gradient is easy.
  • Do not forget to carry water. You can refill your water bottles from streams or dhabas that you will find on the way.
  • Start the day at the crack of dawn, and enjoy the magnificent sunrise from your place of stay.
  • We will start the trek immediately after breakfast to the Valley of Flowers, located at a height of 3505 m or 11,500 ft
  • The trek will take up to 6 hours to complete, and the terrain is a relatively easy, level walk in the Valley of Flowers.
  • After walking for a while, you reach the gates of the Valley of Flowers National Park. After obtaining the ticket, we head inside to notice subtle changes in the scenery at first leading to a beautiful old bridge built over a stream bubbling through the park. 
  • After crossing the bridge, the scenery changes abruptly as the valley opens up on one side, revealing a stunning vista of a seemingly endless expanse of a carpet of flowers of all colours and kinds!
  • You can spot Geraniums, Himalayan Rose, Blue Poppy, the Dog Flower and a lot of other species of flowers all in different vibrant colours - blue, red, yellow, pink.
  • After lunch, start the trek back to Ghangaria.
  • Reach back to Ghangaria, where you can rest, have dinner and call it a day.
  • Detailed Note: You have to leave Ghangria at 6.00 AM so that you can spend more time at Valley of Flowers. The path divides in less than a kilometre. Buy entry tickets to the valley from the gate. Witness and notice the small flowering plants on either side as you walk inside. As you move further, there is a scenic bridge across a gushing stream.
  • As you move further inside Valley of Flowers, the well-laid-out path becomes a narrow footway along the side of the valley. A small stream flows below, and you can also witness some hard snow patches by the side. You can see a drastic turn on the landscape on every side, the direction you turn and looks picture-perfect. Move forward and trek along for a couple of kilometres on the flat path. Cross another shaky bridge. You can collect water to drink from the stream.
  • The Valley of Flowers is a botanists’ fairyland. You can find flowers, leaves, buds in various shapes, sizes, and colours during trekking.
  • The Valley of Flowers is an inner valley that lies between the Gundar Valley and the Hemkund Valley. Start the journey from Ghangria in the Gundar valley to the Pushpavati valley. The Pushpavati valley is named after the Pushpavati river, which comes from the Tipru glacier and flows through the Valley of Flowers. Hemkund valley lies on the other side of the valley of flowers. The entire valley is a carpet of green, yellow, red, blue colours. Surrounded by mountains with trees, a bright sunny day will ensure deep blue skies will take the picture beyond your imagination.
  • As you move further into the valley, you will be covered with an amazing scent. With colourful sceneries and scents, you will feel the Valley of flowers like heaven. The valley of flowers stretches 5-7 km and ends with a glacier. You can also find a stream flowing through the valley. Relax in the icy cold water for some time.
  • During July and August, you can find many flowers like Meadow Geranium, Snake Foil, Hooked Stick Seed, Himalayan Rose, Blue Poppy, River Anemone, White Leaf Hog Foot, Dog Flower, and many more. 
  • As there is no food available in the valley of flowers, you have to carry packed lunch from Ghangaria. You have to return by early afternoon. During the return, you can witness some picturesque views as the afternoon sun falls on the valley from a different direction.

Day 4 - Ghangharia to Hemkund Sahib and back (6 kms - one way) | 9 hours | 14,100 ft

The Trek To Hemkund Sahib

  • Trekking height is 9,600 ft to 14,107 ft and back.
  • The trek will take around 9 to 10 hours and has a distance of 6 km each way.
  • The trek gradient is moderate to difficult.
  • Do not forget to carry water. You can refill your water bottles from hotels that you will find on the way.
  • On this day, rise before the sun for an early breakfast!
  • Start with the preparation for a relatively difficult day ahead!
  • This day, you will undertake the trek to Hemkund Sahib, perched at an altitude of 4300 m!
  • The trek will take a total of up to 9 hours to complete and the terrain of the trek remains steep throughout. Start the trek up the steep path, and you will soon come across a small waterfall as the vista starts improving. 
  • As you go further up, you will start noticing the declining levels of oxygen in the air. Take plenty of breaks along the way to avoid altitude sickness.
  • But the stunning vistas will be more than enough to distract you from the struggle.
  • Enjoy lunch to keep yourself energized.
  • When you finally reach the Hemkund Sahib, take in the serenity and tranquillity pervading the area as well as the picturesque sight of the Hemkund Sahib Gurudwara, alongside the lake.
  • Here in this religious site, it is said that Guru Gobind Singh had meditated in the previous life.
  • With the rare Brahma Kamal visible every now and then, it is a beautiful sight to behold!
  • After relaxing here for a while, and having your lunch alongside the lake, start the descent for Ghanghariya.
  • The descent will be steep and will be difficult on the knees, but it will be a thrilling and invigorating experience!
  • Reach Ghangaria where you can enjoy dinner.
  • You will be staying in Ghangaria for the night!
  • Detailed Note: The weather is unpredictable in the afternoon. So, start the trek in the early morning.
  • Get up and have a hot tea at 5 AM and then start the trek. Please take a light raincoat and a trekking pole for the trek. Take the deviation to Valley of Flowers and continue to trek up the steep path slowly. After 2 hours of trekking, the views begin to get better. After another hour, you start to feel reduced oxygen levels in the air. Take reasonable breaks while climbing and are essential to prevent altitude sickness. Ensure that you do not sit down during these breaks as sitting down causes your muscles to relax, and once you start the trek again, it would be very difficult. Reach Hemkund Sahib Gurudwara in an hour and warm yourself in the Gurudwara and have a hot tea. The Hemkund Sahib Lake lies just behind the Gurudwara.
  • Walkthrough the other side of Hemkund Lake. The lake and the Gurudwara are amazing to watch. You can spot Brahma Kamal, a Himalayan flower around Hemkund. Brahma Kamal is a flower that grows only at heights of 10,000 ft to 15,000 ft. 
  • Leave Hemkund by afternoon. It will take 4 to 5 hours to walk 6 km.

Day 5 - Trek from Ghangharia to Govindghat/Joshimath (13 km or 4-5 hours) | 9,600 ft

  • The trek will take around 4 hours and has a distance of 9 km + 4 km drive.
  • The trek gradient is an easy descent to Poolna.
  • Do not forget to carry water. You can refill your water bottles from dhabas that you will find on the way.
  • Wake up and enjoy another glorious sunrise and satisfying breakfast.
  • After which, we start early for the descent back to the Govindghat.
  • Enjoy lunch at Govindghat
  • The aim is to reach early so that you have enough time left over to be able to explore surrounding places like Auli as per your leisure.
  • This is where you will be staying overnight and having dinner.
  • Detailed Note: Start the trek after breakfast. The path back to Poolna is through the same way that you took on Day 1. Drive from Govind Ghat to Poolna. Reach Govind Ghat by 2.00 PM.

The Valley of flowers is one of the few Himalayan treks open during the monsoons. In fact, it is ideally undertaken during the monsoons, between July to September. The best time to see the flowers in bloom would be in July or August!

What is the weather in the Valley of Flowers, Uttarakhand? What is the temperature at the Valley of flowers during the monsoons?

Since the ideal time to undertake the trip would be in the monsoons, it is best to be prepared for rain during any part of the journey. The path can also get slippery and dangerous, so it is advised that you follow the trek leaders’ instructions carefully. Furthermore, since it is a high altitude trek, the weather will always remain pleasant and cool. The temperature varies from a minimum of 7 degrees to a maximum of 17 degrees this time around!

Is valley of flowers trek difficult?

This is considered to be an easy to moderate trek. Most of the days have a steady, gentle incline and decline. However, the day trek to Hemkund is steep ascent and descent. This and that it is a 6 day journey make it a moderate level trek. Keep this in mind while choosing to go for it!

How to reach the Valley of Flowers National Park?

The Valley of flowers is located in the Chamoli district of Uttarakhand. The trek starts from Govindghat. You can reach Govindghat from Rishikesh. Rishikesh is one of Uttarakhand's big cities and lies at the foothills of the Himalayas.

How to reach Govindghat from Rishikesh? 

Govindghat is almost 272 km away from Rishikesh and lies on the Rishikesh Badrinath Highway. It would take around 12 hours to reach Govindghat from Rishikesh. So it is mandatory to reach Rishikesh a day before and rest and sleep before the long road journey. It is recommended to start your journey from Rishikesh as early as possible. If you start at 5 AM then you can reach Govindghat by evening.

Travelling on your own:

If you are travelling on your own with 4-5 people, hire a vehicle. It may cost about Rs 6,000 – Rs 6,500. If you are travelling alone, you can catch a bus from Rishikesh to Badrinath and get off at Govindghat. You can find the bus at 4 AM from the Rishikesh bus stand. You can also reach Govindghat by taking the bus to Pandukeshwar from the Rishikesh bus stand at 4.30 AM. The journey may cost around Rs 400. If you do not want to travel in the early morning, you can take buses to Joshimath, 20 km away from Govindghat, leaving the Rishikesh bus stand at 6 AM. Then, stay at Joshimath and take a shared cab to Govindghat the next morning.

The Scenic Drive
The journey from Rishikesh to Govindghat is exciting as you travel along the river Ganga. You can witness the PanchPrayag or the five confluences that make up the river Ganga – DevPrayag, RudraPrayag, KarnaPrayag, NandPrayag and VishnuPrayag during the journey. So stop the vehicle, spend some time here, and witness. You will go through many bustling hill towns during your journey until KaranPrayag. After KaranPrayag, you can experience the mountains driving over narrow extensions near the Alaknanda River. To reach and start the amazing trek of the valley of flowers, first, you have to reach Joshimath, near Haridwar. Haridwar is well-connected to the major cities of India like Delhi and cities/towns of Uttarakhand and can be reached by buses, trains or via flights.

  • Bus: Take a direct bus from Delhi and reach Haridwar. Then take another bus or taxi to reach Joshimath which is 278 km from Haridwar. A 1-hour drive from Joshimath will take you to the base camp of the trek Govindghat. 
  • Trains/Rail: Direct trains are available from Delhi to reach Haridwar Railway station. 
  • Airport: The nearest airport is the Jolly Grant Airport which is 40 km from Haridwar.

When does the Valley of Flowers open?

The valley of flowers trek opens at the start of June to Mid-October. The rest of the year the valley gets covered in snow. The best time to visit the valley is in monsoon months from Mid-July to Mid-August.

Where is the valley of flowers?

The Valley of Flowers is located in the north of the Chamoli district of Uttarakhand. The trek to The Valley of Flowers starts from Haridwar. Take a direct bus or train to reach Haridwar. So, the distance covered in the Valley of Flowers Trek is around 46 km. From Govindghat, you have to trek 14 km to reach Ghangaria and will take 8-10 hour. To reach the Valley of Flowers from the base camp Ghangaria, you have to cover another 14 km which would take 7-8 hours.

What type of shoes are needed for the Valley of Flowers trek?

Valley of flowers trek is one of the most popular treks in the Himalayan region. Though the Valley of Flowers trek's difficulty level is medium to moderate, it requires all the precautions and prerequisites for a Himalayan trek. It would be best to carry trekking shoes and be high ankle and with a high grip. Also, it is recommended to buy waterproof shoes. Carry at least four pairs of cotton socks as well.

Is Diamox advisable for the Valley of Flowers trek?

No, Diamox is not advisable for the Valley of Flowers trek. Diamox is a medicine that you must take to prevent Acute Mountain Sickness. The Valley of Flowers trek's difficulty level is medium to moderate and is quite suitable to beginners, and you can easily adjust well with daily exercises. However, if you find any Acute Mountain Sickness symptoms like headache, nausea, and vomiting, then inform your trek leader.
