  • Explore and experience different terrains on one trek: from Lohajung to Bedni Bugyal.

Roopkund Trek Overview

This Roopkund Trek package is an 8-day long trek through the Himalayas, meant for people looking for some adventure. Teeming with diverse flora and fauna, deep virgin forests, and some truly crazy peaks, this trek is like no other. It offers you a plethora of different textures, ecosystems, and sights as you go higher and higher up in altitude. Trekkers will climb from a height of 8,000 ft to a height of more than 16,000 ft, covering a distance of 53 kilometers in 8 days.

There is no better way to get away from the habitual humdrum of everyday life than by exploring Roopkund. The scenic route takes you from Lohajung and the Bedni River up to Mystery Lake nestled in the snow-capped lap of Mt. Trishul at an altitude of 16,499 ft.

The best time to take up this package would be during the summer months - April, May, and June. This is when the snow is at its heaviest. However, if you prefer a little less snow, you would probably prefer to trek during August - September.
One of the most famous attractions of Roopkund is Roopkund Lake. At the bottom of this lake, there are about 200 skeleton bodies frozen and preserved in the natural ice of the glacial lake. Scientists have concluded that these skeletons belonged to 9th-century tribesmen. If your primary objective of the Roopkund Trek is to witness Mystery Lake, then consider trekking during September - October, when there will be no snow covering the surface of the lake. During the monsoon, Roopkund is stunning to behold, with all the greenery at its brightest and most lush. However, the trek must be done with caution during the monsoon as it can prove to be detrimental at times.

The Roopkund Trek is a favorite for avid trekkers. You will begin your trip by traveling from Kathgodam to the Guesthouse in Lohajung, which will be the base for this Himalayan camp. Those who have availed of the option of transportation from Kathgodam to Lohagunj will meet our representative here. You will spend the first night here, beginning the Roopkund trek the next day. Starting on the second day, you will embark on the trekking portion of your journey. Taking the Lord Curzon trail from Lohajung, you will go steadily uphill through Lohajung Pass to the Bedni River.

On the third day, as you trek from Didna Village to Ali Bugyal, you’ll get to take in the view of the Garhwal Himalayan Range - one of the numerous sights to look forward to on this mountain trek. From Ali Bugyal, you’ll trek to Ghora Lotani on the fourth day, and onwards to Bhagwabasa on the fifth day. In Bhagwabasa, you may begin to feel some difficulty because of the high altitudes, the zig-zag route, and the icy cold weather. It is because of this that the trek is considered to be moderately hard to difficult, and requires some amount of preparation before embarking on it. Roopkund proves its worth, making it a moderate level of difficulty to trek, ensuring that an appropriate level of fitness is required for it.

From Bhagwabasa, the guide will take you to Roopkund Lake. This lake, also known as Mystery Lake, is known best for the mysterious Roopkund Lake skeletons. Years ago, unsuspecting British Officials stumbled upon a lake full of skeletons frozen over and preserved by ice. Roopkund Lake’s skeletons have attracted much speculation over the years, and even more, tourists, travel a great distance to bear witness to this sight. Roopkund Lake is one of the best destinations for avid trekkers for reasons apart from the skeletons in the lake. Situated at an altitude of 16,499 ft, nestled in the lap of Mt. Trishul, Roopkund Lake boasts not only a breathtaking destination but an incredibly scenic route as well. The trail for this mountain trek will take you through meadows, lush forests, and sparkling, gushing rivers. From this skeleton lake, you will then move on to Bedni Bugyal.

On the seventh day, you will begin trekking back. From Bedni Bugyal, the trek will bring you back down to Lohajung, taking a steep turn for the Neel Ganga and arriving at Wan, completing your trek on the eighth day. Transportation from Lohajung to Kathgodam can be arranged for those interested at an additional cost.

The Roopkund Trek is categorized as a moderate to difficult trek. Because of the high altitude and the extremely cold weather in and around Lohajung and upwards, it does require a bit of preparation. Those interested in availing of the package for the Roopkund Trek are required to be in good physical shape. As preparation, you should be able to jog about 4.5 kilometers in 30 minutes, since your lungs would need to be strong enough to handle the altitude. Additionally, since the Roopkund Trek requires both physical and mental strength, those seeking to avail of this package must be 12 years of age or over.
