You can first travel to Gangtok, the capital city of Sikkim, before attempting to reach Lachen and Lachung. You can take a private vehicle or sign up for a tour from Gangtok to Lachen and Lachung. The trip from Gangtok takes about 6-7 hours, and the roads can be difficult, especially in the winter. Booking a tour or hiring a local driver who is acquainted with the routes and circumstances is advised.
Gurudongmar Lake, which is in Lachen and is at an elevation of 5,183 meters (17,000 feet), is the main draw. Both Buddhists and Sikhs revere the lake for its pristine beauty and regard it as sacred. You can also visit the nearby Chopta and Thangu valleys, which have beautiful scenery and opportunities for nature hikes.
The Yumthang Valley in Lachung is a must-see. It is renowned for having colorful flowers, especially in the spring. The valley offers breathtaking views as it is encircled by mountains covered in snow. Additionally, you can go to Yumthang Hot Springs, which are said to have therapeutic qualities.
The months of April through June and September through November are the ideal times to travel to Lachen and Lachung. In these months, the weather is pleasant and there is little chance of snow-related roadblocks. However, you can schedule a trip between December and March if you want to see the snowfall and enjoy the winter charm. Please be aware that the region may experience heavy snowfall and extremely chilly winters, which could result in road closures and limited accessibility.
