The first temple of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints is the Hamilton New Zealand Temple, which is located in the southern hemisphere. It was dedicated by the church's president, David O. McKay, and claims more than 13 million members, nearly half of whom are located in the United States.

During the 1880s, the main Mormon preachers arrived in New Zealand. They were impressed by the Mori people's progress. There were slightly more than 40,000 Mormons living in New Zealand in 2013.
