Highlights of Imperial City

Ten huge gates mark the entry of the Imperial City of Hue. It has a total boundary of 10 km. It has been divided into two parts: the Citadel and the Forbidden City. The Citadel comprised grand palaces and important places of worship. The Forbidden City, as the name suggests, was not meant for just anybody. People other than the emperors and their family were forbidden from entering this at of the Imperial City.  Accommodation facilities for the royal family members were here.

The construction of this city is said to have been planned by the founder of the Nguyen Dynasty, Gia Long in the year 1803. It finally came to a standstill in the year 1832 when Minh Mang King gave final instructions. The city has taken full advantage of natural features surrounding it. It has been built facing the Ngu Binh Mountain which serve to be a natural barrier and on the banks of Perfume river.
