A sprawling verdant oasis with winding path make Slottsskogen one of the favourite places to go in Gothenburg Sweden where you can get close to Gotland ponies, elks and other Nordic animals. Located to the southwest of the city centre, the fairy tale like European Park is home to the Natural History Museum, Gothenburg Botanical Gardens and a zoo.
Miles of asphalt paths running through open fields and woodlands are great for running and taking a stroll. The outdoor gym at the northern end and a running track at the southern end of the park are places where you can visit for a workout. In a bike ride you can explore the interior of the path along the forested trails all the way to Vastra Frolunda.
Since its establishment in 1874, Slottsskogen Park has been the first choice for citizens of Gothenburg to relax. It is shady with trees and picturesque. There is also a zoo and children's playground in the park, all of which are open to citizens and tourists free of charge.

Huge park on the outskirts of the city centre. Parking metres are available. I did not know what to expect. Absolutely huge, with large flat grass areas to relax, picnic, or unwind, and forest areas. A free zoo in the middle allows you to see Gotland ponies, pingouins, sea lions, the famous moose, and other Nordic animals. Very well done. There’s even a little petting zoo for children (closed at the moment due to Corona). You can stop for an ice cream or waffle at a little cafe in the middle, or when you get to the end of the zoo, there’s a much bigger restaurant that offers a lot more choices, including savoury dishes. There’s also a great kids playground. Near the natural history museum.
The zoo at Slottsskogen Park is free and always open. Open from May through August is the petting zoo. Tram 1, 5, or 7 may be taken to the park from Kungsportsavenyn; just get out at the Botaniska Tradgarden stop.
