The prosperous and wealthy kingdom of Vijayanagara had its capital at Hampi. As most of these monuments date back to the third century BCE they are protected and sometimes even restrict the entry of tourists.

The clash of such happenings eventually led to the destruction of priceless artifacts. By the time kings were overthrown and the British took over India, Hampi was recorded as an abandoned city where vegetation and wildlife had taken over the land. The process of restoration and methods to preserve these artifacts were taken and the most delicate and important ones were stored in museums. The monuments on the other hand which stand tall to this day are protected and hence labeled as a World Heritage Site.
