Kumily is the largest of the gram panchayats in the Idukki district of the state of Kerala in India. It is a town in the Cardamom Hills near Thekkady and the Periyar Tiger Reserve which is one of the famous places to visit in Kumily. Kumily is called as the gateway town into Kerala from Tamil Nadu. The town of Kumily in the present day has roots going back to the colonial period of the British Raj. Thekkumkoor Ra​​jas in the central part of Travancore ruled the Kumily region. Later, when Marda Varma organized her campaign in the central part of Travancore, many areas including Kumily were returned and the kingdom of Travancore ruled.

The area was given under the total control of the Poonjar kings till the end of the 19th century. When the British powers started their domination over India, that is when there were some significant and drastic changes in the town of Kumily. This is the reason why there are some historic places to visit in Kumily. They took these regions under their control from the local rulers and transformed the forestlands into lands of cultivation. Cash crops such as cardamom, pepper, coffee, and cinnamon have begun to grow on a large scale in this mountainous area. Several people were brought in from Kerala and the neighbouring areas to work in these  plantations. Some of these plantations still exist to this day and are places to visit in Kumily. Kumily is located in the south eastern part of the district of Idukki at a height ranging from approximately 2,890 ft from the mean sea level.

A pretty huge portion of the land there is covered by lots of cardamom plantations and some parts of the land in the south portion and the southeast portion are included in the premises of Periyar Wildlife Sanctuary which consists of thick forests. The town of Kumily has always been a special destination for the majority of  the tourists because of its cool and refreshing climate. The nearby district is the region of Kottayam and is one of the places to visit in Kumily. Another of the places to visit in Kumily is the nearby municipality area of Kattappana. Famous tourist places to visit in Kumily nearby are Thekkady, Anchuruli (near Kattappana), Ottakathalamedu. You can be at ease and just enjoy the serenity of the plantations and valleys.
