Places to visit near Guwahati

Cherrapunjee, one of the wettest places on the planet, is only second to Mawsynram in terms of annual rainfall. 

You can only imagine what this town looks like since it is lovely and humid, cool with practically year-round rivers and streams running, and lush with an evergreen carpet that spans over mountains and woods. 

What makes Cherrapunjee even more unique is that it is home to root bridges built of natural tree roots twisted by locals to span rivers. 

Cherrapunjee, around 150 kilometres from Guwahati, is a must-see throughout the monsoons and winters, and you should not miss the Living Root Bridge, Seven Sisters Falls, and Nohkalikai Falls.

The West Garo Hills form one of Meghalaya's biggest portions, including Shillong in its wake. 

Most of these hills have a distinct tribal culture, with the Bodo clan of the Tibeto-Burman ethnicity dwelling in the majority. 

Koches, Rajbanshis, Hajongs, Meches, Kacharis, Rabhas, and Dalus are among the other tribes that coexist. 

A visit here will educate you about Meghalaya's rustic, aboriginal culture while also allowing you to immerse your thirsty eyes in grandeur such as the Nokrek Biosphere Reserve, Tura Peak, Arbella Peak, Mir Jumla's Tomb, and Kima Songs. 

Guwahati is 210 kilometres away from the West Garo Hills.

It is located 177 kilometres from Guwahati and is another important city in Assam. 

Tezpur is surrounded by nature and has a rich historical background. 

There are structures and edifices that date back to the fourth century that are still here now and are a gift to investigate. 

There are a lot of tea plantations in this region where you can observe how tea is plucked and take a tea tour to learn more about the tea-making process. 

There are magnificent Hindu temples and natural areas just beyond the city limits. 

Don't forget to go sightseeing, and while you're at it, make a point of seeing Agnigarh, Bamuni Hills, Chitralekha Udvan, and Da- Parbatia, among other places.

This national park is well-known for being India's largest sanctuary for one-horned rhinos, and it would be a great escape from the hustle and bustle of city life. 

If you're lucky, you could get to see some tigers here. 

The reserve also boasts a substantial elephant breeding population, as well as swamp deer and wild water buffalos. 

Bird Life International has also designated the park as an Important Bird Area (IBA) for its efforts in protecting a variety of rare avifaunal species. 

Tall elephant grass, marshlands, and deep tropical forests cover wide swaths of the landscape. 

The Brahmaputra River runs straight through the park, and many migrating birds visit.

Nongpoh is a town in Meghalaya's Ri-Bhoi district, 48 kilometres from Guwahati. 

This town, located in the foothills of the East Khasi Hills, is usually preferred as a stopover on road travels to Shillong. 

But it has its own allure. 

You have alternatives for the weekend with attractions like Nature Around, Orchid Lake Resort, and Roadside Market. 

Visit the Nongkhyllem Wildlife Sanctuary, Phrut Day Lake, and Marngar Lake.

Shillong, the state capital of Meghalaya, is only 100 kilometres from Guwahati and so quite easy to visit. 

Most Indians and tourists who wish to experience the North-East feel select it as a vacation destination. 

Shillong is a popular weekend destination because of its parks and lakes, cathedrals and waterfalls, wines and delicious food. 

Especially in the winter, when dense fog descends over the beautiful green slopes. 

Shillong Peak, Ward's Lake, Williamson Sangma State Museum, Spread Eagle Falls, Elephant Falls, Cathedral Catholic Church, and Lady Hydari Park are among the top locations to visit in the area.

Chandubi Lake is a natural lake in the Rabha Hasong Autonomous Council in Assam's Kamrup District. 

It's a great place to go for a hike or a picnic. 

During the winter, this lake attracts a large number of migratory birds. 

It is 64 kilometres away from the metropolis of Guwahati. 

The beauty of the lake and its surrounds creates an allure that draws a large number of tourists who come to rest in the lap of nature.

Pobitora Wildlife Sanctuary is located on the floodplains of the Brahmaputra River in the Morigaon district, some 45 kilometres from Guwahati. 

Pobitora was formerly a pasture area for cows in the former Nagaon district, and it rose to prominence during the 1961-62 calendar year due to the sighting of a Single Horned Rhino (Rhinoceros unicornis). 

Several rhinos wandered from Lawkhowa and Orange Wild Life Sanctuaries at this period and gradually became residents.

Umiam Lake, located around 82 kilometres from Guwahati, is one of the great weekend destinations around Guwahati. It is one of the largest lakes in the area and is located directly on the Shillong-Guwahati route. The water is breathtaking. Umiam Lake, nestled in the forests, is one of Shillong's largest, supplying a significant portion of the city's power through its dam constructions. It's a wonderful spot to spend time with family or friends. Though adventure activities are more expensive, the area is recognised for its tranquilly and vegetation.
