summary

As the place where British officials exiled prisoners during their rule, the Cellular Jail is one of the Andaman Islands' most historically important buildings. It is also known as Kala Pani, which means "black water" in Hindi and was the term for solitary confinement at the time. Since the Sepoy mutiny, which resulted in the fatalities of numerous Indian soldiers, British officers have used the penitentiary as a prison for prisoners.

Because they were cut off from their homes, families, and loved ones, this prison was considered the ideal location for sending soldiers who protested against the British. The Ex-Andaman Political Prisoner's Fraternity Circle petitioned the government to recognise the prison as a national memorial, and the Prime Minister of India dedicated it to the nation on 11 February 1979.

There is even a gallery devoted to photographs and exhibits of the movement of freedom fighters. In addition, the penitentiary has a library and a gallery displaying significant events from the American Revolution. One of the most popular attractions is the eternal flame of the Freedom-Swatantrya Jyot, constructed in commemoration of the soldiers who sacrificed their lives for the freedom movement.

Points Of Interest for Cellular Jail

Unique Architecture

The Cellular Jail's unique architecture was designed to keep prisoners isolated from one another and to prevent communication among them. The seven wings of the jail radiate from a central tower, resembling the spokes of a wheel, and each wing has three stories of cells. The jail was designed in this manner to ensure that the prisoners had no contact with one another, which was seen as a way to prevent them from organizing and planning rebellions against the British colonial rulers. The design of the jail was a reflection of the British colonial policies that aimed to suppress any form of dissent or rebellion among the Indian population.

The Swatantrata Jyot

The Swatantrata Jyot or the Flame of Independence is a permanent light that has been kept burning in the Cellular Jail as a tribute to the freedom fighters who were imprisoned there. It is a symbol of India's struggle for independence and a reminder of the sacrifices made by the freedom fighters.
