Clarke Quay is named after Andrew Clarke, Singapore's second governor. Clarke Quay was previously an important trading port, and after the port was relocated, the Quay was totally refurbished to become the major entertainment hub that it is today.
Clarke Quay's renovation in 2003 was handled by the British architectural firm Alsop Architects. The company was given two development stages to redesign the riverfront dining spaces, streetscapes, and shophouse facades. A key factor in its success is the clever control of the microclimate achieved through the construction of complex shading and cooling systems, which lower the ambient temperature by 4 degrees Celsius while enriching the riverside and streets with incredible visual attraction. Both the Cityscape Asia Awards for Best Waterfront Development in 2008 and the 2007 Cityscape Architectural Review Award (Tourism, Travel & Transport - Built) went to the project.
