The governor of Bombay, Sir George Sydenham Clarke was the one to lay its foundation stone. First Battalion of Somerset Infantry was a crucial event that took place at this gate. It is said that after India gained its independence, the last lot of British troops left India and passed through this gate. These services are provided by the Maharashtra Tourist Development Corporation (MTDC).  These caves are located on the Elephanta Island. They are dedicated to the Hindu God- Lord Shiva.
