Places to Visit in Kundapura

The climate in the Kundapaura region is tropical and humid. In Kundapura, the winters are short and the average temperature is around 20°C. Strong gusts and heavy rains accompany the monsoon season, lowering the temperature by a few degrees.

Trasi is a little town 12 kilometers north of Kundapur known for its lovely beach, beach resort, and Turtle Bay. The one-kilometer-long beach is a popular picnic location. Located on the turtle bay, the trasi beach is known for golden sands. The beach offers fun activities like swimming, scuba diving, and snorkelling. The beach is also known for its scenic beauty and calm backwaters.

Shankaranarayana Temple, one of Lord Parshuram's seven sacred places and a major religious center, attracts a huge number of followers. A naturally formed Udbhava Linga, considered to be a confluence of Lord Narayana and Lord Shiva, serves as the temple's presiding deity and is dedicated to Lord Shiva.

This temple, dedicated to Goddess Mahalasa Narayani, is located on the banks of the River Varahi and was once a commerce hub. The site is sacred as many hindu communities like Goud Saraswati Brahim community and many other sages used to visit the temple regularly. 

Uppinakudru, also known as Salt Island, is a religiously significant location. Lord Gopala Krishna Temple is one of several historical and popular temples in the area, which once served as a center of trading for salt and seafood. The island is located 6 kilometres north of Kundapura and is a small village island. The island is also famous for puppet dance or puppetry.

The Holy Rosary Church is a lovely structure on the west side of town, on the banks of the Panchagangavalli River. Dedicated to Our Lady of Rosary by Rev. Fr. Joseph Vaz in 1681.

The church is decorated with tiles and has a nicely carved wooden altar. Within the church grounds, there is also a Bell Tower. After being attacked by Tipu Sultan in 1757, the church was renovated and now houses a school and an orphanage.

The Sri Mookimba Temple is said to have formerly been a place where rishis would undertake penance. This temple is dedicated to Goddess Mookimba and is located in the Kodachaadri peak Valley today. The temple's interior houses a Jyotirlinga that is separated into two portions by a golden line. Goddess Mahasarawati, Mahakali, and Mahalakshmi are represented in the larger half, while Vishnu, Brahma, and Maheshwara are represented in the smaller half. The temple's dome, as well as the kalasha, are made of gold.

Dedicated to Lord Ganesha, the temple is located on a hill and is located at a distance of 8 kilomteres from Kundapur. Sage Agasthya is said to have undertaken penance at this location to attract Indira. The deity's idol is a magnificent 12-foot tall elephant that was found in the wild

Kodi Beach is surrounded on three sides by water, making it an ideal destination for beachgoers. This beach is also known as Delta Beach since it is where the Suvarna River meets the beautiful Arabian Sea. It has a tiny fishing harbor and is well-known for its toddy and freshly prepared seafood.

Aside from the usual fishing antics, the beach offers breathtaking sunset and dawn views, as well as a pristine environment and seclusion due to the limited number of visitors.

In the vicinity of the town of Kundapur, there is an ancient temple built by sage Parshuram. The temple's most intriguing feature is its 10-foot-tall wooden idols portraying warrior uniforms, which were most likely created in memory of a war that occurred sometime between the 1600s and 1700s.

This ancient temple, once again dedicated to Lord Ganesha, is located near the base of a massive granite boulder that resembles an elephant in its sleeping posture. Lord Ganesha, the presiding god, is depicted in a seated attitude.

Ayurkoda Abhisheka and Akki Kadubu Seve are two prominent rites done here. The first ceremony is bathing the idol in thousands of pots of water, while the second entails preparing a dish with 480 kilograms of rice and 240 kilograms of pulses.
