About the Hemis Monastery:

Hemis Monastery is a Himalayan Buddhist Monastery (Hemis Gompa) of the Drukpa Lineage, in Hemis, Ladakh. Hemis Monastery is 979.1m from Delhi and 45 Km from Leh. The Monastery was Re-established in 1672 by the Ladakhi King Sengge Namgyal. The Hemis Festival is dedicated to Lord Padmasambhava (Guru Rinpoche) venerated as the Dance Performance at Hemis Monastery representative reincarnation of Buddha. This time the  Hemis Festival Fair is also held.


About Hemis National Park:

Hemis National Park (or Hemis High Altitude National Park) is a high altitude national park in the eastern Ladakh Union Territory of the Republic of India. Globally famous for its snow leopards, it is believed to have the highest density of them in any protected area in the world. It is the only national park in India that is north of the Himalayas, the largest notified protected area in India (largest National park) and is the second-largest contiguous protected area, after the Nanda Devi Biosphere Reserve and surrounding protected areas. The park is home to several species of endangered mammals, including the snow leopard. Hemis National Park is India's protected area inside the Palearctic realm, outside the Changthang Wildlife Sanctuary northeast of Hemis, and the proposed Tso Lhamo Cold Desert Conservation Area in North Sikkim.
No metalled or motorable roads traverse the park. The park offers several routes for trekking from mid-June to mid-October. The best season for spotting snow leopards, is, however, in late winter.

Nearest airport: Leh Kushok Bakula Rimpochee Airport, Leh district about 5 km (3.1 mi) away.
Nearest railhead: Kalka, Haryana.
Nearest highway: Leh-Manali Highway, and National Highway 1D (Srinagar - Kargil - Leh), both near the northern borders of the park.
Nearest town: There are quite a few villages, and gumphas (monasteries) inside the national park.
Nearest city: The city of Leh is 10 km (6.2 mi) to the north of the park.
