The museum has a huge collection of 35,000 artifacts. But only 3,500 are displayed through various
exhibits. It is a real beauty for all art lovers and history buffs.
The museum is huge. Having 85,000 square feet of exhibition space it has nearly 183 videos and 3,000
objects. At most museums in D.C, the average visit time for guests is 2 hours, while the averagevisit time
for guests at NMAAHC is 5 hours. Obviously, the time taken will depend on your speed, areas and level
of interest, and the crowd inside the museum. But most probably, in one visit you won’t likely be able to
see it all.
You can expect lines to enter the NMAAHC. It's a very popular museum. Lines are there most oftenly
when the museum opens at 10am.

C2: Defending Freedom, Defining Freedom
Continuing the history exhibits, it focuses on racial division across the nation and the century of Jim Crow
laws. It must to explore a Southern Railway passenger coach with segregated compartments. There is
an interactive element in front of the railcar where you can explore organizing and protesting. You can
explore critical actions that were taken during the Civil Rights movement sitting in a modern recreation
of the Woolworth’s lunch counter.

You can see a guard tower from Camp H at Louisiana State Penitentiary at the end of the lunch counter.

A line around the tower can be usually seen, which is the Emmett Till Memorial. It is one of the most
touching exhibits in the museum. In the Civil Rights movement, Till’s murder at the age of 14 in 1955
was a defining moment. Her mother insisted that her son to be displayed in a glass topped casket so
that the world sees. An exhibit about Till’s life, death, and legacy and the original casket is on the
display.
Concourse Level

While exiting the history galleries, you’ll find the Contemplative Court. This peaceful space is especially
for the purpose of reflection and contemplation. You then transition back into the museum out of the
history gallery. The final season of the TV show Scandal was filmed here by Kerry Washington at the
museum! You can recognise it from that show.

Heritage Hall
You’ll find welcome desk, restrooms and the gift shop here. Currently a film by award-winning filmmaker
Ava Duvernay is being screened at The Corona Pavilion. The film, August 28th, looks at the date of 28th
August to tell the story of Martin Luther King Jr, Emmett Till, Hurricane Katrina, Motown music and more
through multiple years.
The NMAAHC is situated at 1400 Constitution Avenue NW on the National Mall. It is between Madison
Drive and Constitution Avenue, next to the Washington Monument and the American History Museum.

There are many ways to reach. From many other destinations, it is a short walk on the National Mall.

Federal Triangle and Smithsonian are the nearest Metro Stations.
It is a short walk from Metro Center, taking 10 to 15 minutes. Just across the street from the museum,
the Circulator Bus drops at the Washington Monument.
Inside the NMAAHC, you wouldnt get guided tours. In the Heritage Hall, Staff and Museum volunteers
are at the welcome desk. And also at maximum crowded points in the museum to give you guidance on
your visit and answer questions.
