The regal hill resort of Ooty in Tamil Nadu is traversed by the 1000 mm-long, meter-gauge Nilgiri Mountain Railway. Children love the fleet of steam locomotives on this line, which they affectionately refer to as "the Toy Train."
Over the course of five hours, the train travels 46 kilometres across undulating hills, verdant meadows, and views of forested mountains. Localities with red-tiled roofs pop up from the greens, and the train occasionally pauses at adorable small hill stations. On this journey, you will be waved through Mettupalayam, Kellar, Coonoor, Wellington, Lovedale, and Ootacamund, reaching a maximum elevation of 4,363 feet.
The lovely train with wooden coaches stops at Kallar, Lovingdale, Wellington, and Coonoor, among other places. A few years ago, the Fernhill station was shut down.
Enjoy nature's splendour as it passes through 16 tunnels, 250 bridges, and 208 curves as it travels through the landscape. While it takes 5 hours to travel the 46 kilometres from Ooty to Mettupalayam uphill, it only takes 3 hours 30 minutes.
Coonoor to Ooty is less scenic than the route from Mettupalayam to Coonoor. The first class is roomier. When travelling through Mettupalayam-Coonoor-Ooty and Ooty-Coonoor-Mettupalayam, try to sit on the right side of the train for the best vistas, and on the left side for the best views.

There are several completely black tunnels to pass through, angular mountain bends, vast sections of dense woodland, and a broad view of lush meadow highlands to take in from your window seat. The Nilgiri Mountain Railway is a part of India's past, which adds even more significance to this dreamlike rail excursion than its brilliantly scenic features. In the year 1908, the British Indian administration built the railroads.
Also, the trains run on locomotives that are at least 50 and 80 years old—the oldest x-class locomotives currently in operation. The railway was added to the larger Indian Mountain Railways World Heritage Site in 2005 when UNESCO designated it as a World Heritage Site.
The Nilgiri Mountain Railway is thought to be best toured from October to June. The winters till spring are marked by clear sky, flower blooming, and a delightful nip in the air, but the summers are oppressive with temperatures near 30 degrees and the monsoons are wrought with erratic rains.
