One of Darjeeling's most popular tourist attractions, this park is most known for its Red Panda and Snow Leopard breeding programme. Several of India's most endangered animal species, such as the snow leopard, red pandas, and Himalayan Salamanders, may be found in the enormous 65.56-acre Zoological Park.

In honour of Padmaja Naidu, a former West Bengal governor and the daughter of Sarojini Naidu, Indira Gandhi gave the park the official name Darjeeling Zoo.The zoo contains more than 200 distinct plant species, including oak, birch, and alder.

The Padmaja Naidu Himalayan Zoological Park is a zoo located in the picturesque hill town of Darjeeling, West Bengal, 3 km from the Darjeeling Train Station. 

 

Popularly known as the Darjeeling Zoo, it is one of the best zoo parks in India and one of the most popular tourist destinations in Darjeeling.

 

 

 

The Himalayan Zoological Park was the previous name of the zoo, which was founded in 1958 as a partnership between the governments of India and West Bengal. 

 

When Indian Prime Minister Indira Gandhi visited the park in 1975 and dedicated it to the memory of Padmaja Naidu, a poet and the daughter of renowned independence fighter Sarojini Naidu, the park received its new name.

 

Several of the least frequently seen animals in the world, including as the Red Panda, Siberian Tiger, Tibetan Wolf, Black Bear, and Snow Leopard, can be found at the zoo. 

 

The zoo is enriched by these and other rarer species, including the Asiatic Black Bear, Barking Deer, Leopards, Blue and Yellow Macaw, Eastern Pangolin, Pheasant, Himalayan Monal, Himalayan Wolf, Lady Amherst, Red Jungle Fowl, Royal Bengal Tiger, Sambar Deer, Temminck's Tragopan, Yak, and many others.

The Padmaja Naidu Zoological Park, which specialises in raising species adapted to alpine conditions, successfully breeds the Red Panda, Snow Leopard, and Critically Endangered Himalayan Wolf in captivity. 

The zoo serves as the focal centre for the red panda programme operated by the Central Zoo Authority of India and is a member of the International Association of Zoos and Aquariums.

The zoo houses a snow leopard and red panda breeding facility that is not on public display. 

 

Snow leopard captive breeding began in 1983 with leopards that were imported to the zoo from Leh-Ladakh, the United States, and Zurich. 

 

With help from staff members from the Rotterdam Zoo, Belgium, the Madrid Zoo, and the Cologne Zoo, the red panda programme was launched in 1994. 

 

The zoo also raises the Himalayan tahr, blue sheep, Himalayan monal, grey peacock pheasant, Himalayan salamander, blood pheasant, and satyr tragopan in addition to these species. 

 

The zoo is renowned for its red panda, Himalayan salamander, Tibetan wolf, and snow leopard conservation breeding programmes.
