Highlights of Sultan Abdul Samad Building

The inauguration of this building took place in 1897. Undoubtedly, this historic building holds substantial importance for Malaysia. It is shaped in the form of the English alphabet F. It has rightfully acquired the status of National Heritage in the year 2007. Along with the Indo- Islamic style of architecture, it is known for its famous clock tower which is 41m high. It is very similar to the Big Ben (The Great Bell of the Great Clock of Westminster) in London, United Kingdom. This building was previously known as Government Office when it was under the rule of the British. This is because it was used specifically for administrative and regulatory purposes. It also used to comprise of three important courts- the Federal Court of Malaysia, High Court of Malay and the Court of Appeals. AC Norman designed this building. He was a well-known British architect.

The sight is worth watching when the building gets illuminated by lights all over.  The Ministry of Tourism and Culture of Malaysia and the Ministry of Communication and Multimedia now reside within the grand Sultan Abdul Samad Building. The most important event that took place at this spot was the declaration of Malaysia’s independence. It is this place which witnessed the hoisting Malaysia’s flag officially for the first time. National Parade Day is also celebrated here itself on 31st August.

Cheritara is a very interesting place to visit as it evokes a sense of curiousity. This is because it is a 3D art gallery explaining Malay legends. The approach adopted towards educating the tourists about the Malaya folklore and traditions is very unique as it is done through splendid artwork.
