One of the pearls in the centre of Azerbaijan is Icheri Seher. This area can be regarded as the epicentre of the ancient city of Baku's cultural legacy. This area is well known for serving as a solid foundation for the nation's economic growth in the 19th century.
As the oil business began to thrive in Baku, the city began to grow outside of the walls of the citadel. When you visit this location, you might be in awe of some of the ancient architectural wonders.
A historic underpass from the 19th century was uncovered in 2008 as Vahid Park was being renovated. After marching 660 feet (approximately 200 metres) along the tunnel, the workmen stopped after encountering water and silt masses. Photos obtained within the cave appear to show how meticulously the tunnel was constructed. White sawn stone was used to pave the tunnel's walls, ceiling, and floor. In addition, the workmen discovered a few Soviet-era coins, which indicated that someone had previously been in the tunnel but had left at least 20 years before to their discovery.
According to academic Vitaly Antonov, Baku was the Caucasian epicentre of the revolutionary movement in the late 18th century, and the discovered underpass was dug at that time.

The Old City of Baku, which includes the Maiden Tower and Palace of the Shirvanshahs, was the first place in Azerbaijan to be recognised by UNESCO as a World Heritage Site in December 2000.
UNESCO listed the Old City on its List of World Heritage in Danger three years later, in 2003, citing earthquake damage from November 2000, insufficient conservation, and "dubious" reconstruction efforts.
The walled city of Baku was taken off the endangered list by the World Heritage Committee in 2009 after receiving acclaim for preservation efforts on the part of Azerbaijan.
