It is one of the sights to see in Puri and is situated in the Khandagiri Digamber Jain temple. It is six km to the west of the city and has a temple on top. It is thought to have been inhabited by Jain scholars for more than 2000 years. Other than the 15 caverns mentioned above, Khandagiri also features Bough Gumpha, Sarpa Gumpha, and Pavana Gumpha next to the entrance that is shaped like the mouth of a tiger.
The farthest entrances are Chota Hathi Gumpha, which features carvings of elephants, and Jaya Vijava Cave, which has a curving Bodhi tree in the middle. The Anatha cave is to the right and is filled with sculptures of women, athletes, and geese carrying flowers. There is no payment to enter the location. From its peak, Khandagiri provides breathtaking views of Bhubaneswar. It takes about 4 hours to see Udayagiri and Khandagiri caves, and the optimum time to go is between 9 and 10 in the morning.
