Shaniwarwada, an ancient fort in Pune, Maharashtra, was built in 1732 as the Peshwas' residence until the Third Anglo-Maratha War in 1818. Despite being damaged by a mysterious fire in 1828, it's now a popular tourist destination. 

The terrible past of this stunning structure makes it one of Pune's most haunted locations. Its walls echo with whispers of betrayal, love, and revenge. It is thought that the soul of the sixth and then-ruling Peshwa was left to roam after he was killed in 1773 by guards acting on the orders of his uncle and aunt.

According to legend, it is said that if one were to stroll around the fort on a full moon night, the echoes of the Peshwa's cries for help could still be heard, pleading  “Kaka mala vachva”; "Uncle, save me!"

Some say they saw her coming, her cries reverberating in the darkness. When night falls, the people of Chandan Nagar choose to stay inside, steering clear of the ghostly presence that haunts the darkness.

The Victory Theatre in Pune remains a remnant of past times - a 100-year-old theater that experienced somber tragedies. Constructed in colonial times, this cinema originally served British viewers but now stands as one of Pune's oldest single-screen cinemas that is still running.

Still, a grim story lurks behind its weathered curtains and seats. Is it the historical significance or the specific location that makes it haunted? No one can say with absolute certainty. What is certain is that many people have claimed to hear voices and see chairs moving on multiple occasions in the movie theater, even when it was believed to be empty.

Some people say they have seen dark figures on the balcony, their presence remaining even after the movie ends.

Sinhagad, an ancient fort located approximately 35 kilometers southwest of the city, has witnessed various battles, such as the Battle of Sinhagad in 1670. During the daytime, the fort is a sought-after spot for picnics due to its strategic position on a hill, but at night it transforms into one of Pune's most infamous haunted locations.

Reports of Maratha soldiers' apparitions, a school bus plunged off a cliff, and a white man throwing himself off the cliff are common sightings.

The Mansion, an abandoned bungalow on Residency Road, is rumored to be haunted due to its dilapidated state and reports of a single woman's death. People have heard spooky sounds and witnessed an event in which they observed a woman perched on the roof of a building, gazing directly at them. After looking back, they realized she was gone. The paranormal investigators also noted a strong presence of negativity in the location.

Khadki War Cemetery is known for having one of the most amusing ghost stories in the nation. The cemetery contains graves from the time of World War I and World War II. The location contains burial sites from India, Pakistan, and other Commonwealth countries.

Reports indicate that deceased soldiers from Eastern and Western Africa were laid to rest in the cemetery, while Indians were denied burial space. So, the Indians constructed a lovely graveyard in a piece of land close by. Today, numerous individuals have claimed to see and hear ghosts from both cemeteries engaging in nightly battles to seek revenge for bias.

The tale of the ghost at Lady Halima Begum Urdu Primary School is surrounded by more controversy and has the scent of a conspiracy rather than a haunting. Students reportedly witnessed a white ghost in the shape of an egg, which had red eyes and fangs, emerging from a blackboard. This caused fear and a rapid evacuation of the school.

Various students also shared experiences where they discovered messages such as ‘You will pass away shortly’ scribbled on their notebooks. One student additionally mentioned that he passed out at school with no clear cause.

Holkar Bridge is known as one of the most haunted spots in Pune, a bridge not to be crossed at night with tales of its ghosts roaming long before India's partition. The 1800s saw the construction of the bridge by Madharao Peshwa, which was subsequently named after Yashwantrao Holkar, who was known to have camped under the bridge multiple times.

Afterward, the British soldiers continued to use the area as a camp until 1947. The unusually high amount of accidental deaths occurring on the bridge, combined with the presence of the Holkar Bridge Cemetery below, leads people to think that the bridge is haunted.

The Torna Fort, also called Prachandagad, is the highest hill fort in Pune. It was the first fort conquered by Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj in 1646. From the top, visitors can see other ancient forts like Raigad, Rajgad, Purandar, and Sinhagad Fort.
