Dharamshala, the spiritual centre of a great number of Tibetan monks, has sculpted up the majestic Namgyal Monastery in Himachal. It has accommodation for around 200 monks who are dedicated to conserving the unique knowledge, customs, tantric practices, Buddhist texts, and culture that they brought with them from Tibet. This monastery's modern incarnation is often referred to as Namgyal Tantric College.

The monastery, commonly known as "the Dalai Lama Temple," presently serves as Tenzin Gyatso, the 14th Dalai Lama's private monastery.

The monastery was established in Tibet in the 16th century by the Third Dalai Lama, Sonam Gyatso, and was later relocated to India in 1959.

One of the most prominent institutions for studying and practising the Gelug school of Tibetan Buddhism, also known as the "Yellow Hat" tradition, is Namgyal Monastery.
