Why is Madras now called Chenn

The city was actually an English settlement at Fort St.George. Damarla Venkatadri Nayaka was the chieftain when the English East India company came for its commercial activities. In the village of Madresapattinam, Damarla Venkatadri Nayaka granted a strip of the area measuring about three miles to the English who were looking for new settlements. A new grant was issued in 1645 by the new Raja, Sri. Rangarajulu due to the expiry of the old treaty. It empowered the company to flourish and attach an extra piece of land to an area that became the foundation of Madras into its present form. Later in the eighteenth century, the city became an important trade centre between India and Europe. After the Independence and the formulation of states, Madras became the capital of Tamil Nadu. In 1998, Madras acquired its new name as Chennai. Formerly, Chennai was known as Channapatna, which was named by Damarla Venkatadri Nayaka in honour of his father Damarla Chennappa Nayakudu.       Hence, that is the journey of Chennai from Madras
