Memorial

Highlights of Memorial

You can fully immerse yourself in the area. It is in a spatial structure which is fully accessible. It is open day and night and from all of the four sides. The memorial is in a wave-like form and it's on a slight slope wherever you stand. Many visitors get a moment of confusion or even uncertainty on the uneven concrete floor. To confront the topic in your own unique way, its openness and subtleness give you space. The lack of a central point of remembrance and immense size of the installation raises the question on the conventional concept of a memorial. Without the usual means it creates a place of remembrance.

The underground information centre, also designed by Eisenman, supplements the memorial to the Shoah. Information on the victims and the locations is found in a space covering 800 square metres. Dealing with the fates of individuals, there are farewell letters, photographs, diaries and themed rooms such as the Room of Sites, Room of Names, Room of Dimensions, and the Room of Families. Short biographies tell the story of victims. Showing the sites of persecution and extermination, there are historical photographs and film footage .

Points Of Interest for Memorial

Commemorating the victims of National Socialism are two other memorials in Tiergarten not far from the Memorial to the Murdered Jews of Europe. There is a violin music constantly changing in tone that draws attention to the memorial to the Sinti and Roma of Europe Murdered under National Socialism. It is surrounded by plants and glass walls. As a memorial to the homosexual persecuted in the Nazi era a tender same-sex love scene plays as a cinematic endless loop inside the massive erect concrete cube. The murder of thousands of patients from nursing homes and sanatoriums and also "racially" and socially undesirable people is commemorated by a transparent blue glass wall which is 24-meter-long. Documenting the history of the victims of Nazi Euthanasia program, a permanent open-air exhibition is also there.

With a total area of about 19,000 sq. meters, the wave-shaped field consists of more than 2700 steeles. It has entries from all sides. Varying from one another only in height, the individual concrete steles create an undulating pattern depending upon their location. The abstract form of the memorial is intended to stimulate reflection.

The persecution and extermination of the European Jews is documented and exhibited in the "Place of Information '' located under the field of steles. A visitor receives the basic information about the historical context in the foyer. Then there are four thematic rooms in which you enter where the topic is dealt with from a historical perspective. Not competing with each other, the field of steles and the "place of information"  complement each other. They together form the Memorial to the Murdered Jews of Europe.

Best time to visit Memorial

Cora-Berliner-Strasse 1, 10117 in Berlin is the location of the memorial. Before the Second World War, it was a city which had one of the largest populations of Jews in Europe.  It is  located in Berlin's Friedrichstadt district centrally adjacent to the Tiergarten. It is close to the Brandenburg Gate, and the Reichstag building.  The "death strip" once divided the city into the Berlin wall where The monument is situated. Acting as the administrative centre of Hitler's killing machine during the war, the area with his bunker and the Chancellery building are both close to each other. Many of Berlin's foreign embassies are situated near the memorial. The monument is organized into a rectangle-like array.
