Matheran Overview

Located in the Sahyadri Mountain Range of Maharashtra, Matheran is a charming hill station that transports you to a world of serene beauty and nostalgia. Known for its pollution-free environment and unique mode of transport, this tiny paradise is a must-visit for those seeking a break from the city's chaos. In this travel article, we'll take you on a journey through Matheran, where every step brings you closer to nature and tranquility.

Arriving in Style:

What sets Matheran apart from other hill stations is its ban on motor vehicles. As you disembark from the toy train at the Neral Railway Station, you're greeted by the inviting red beauties - horses and hand-pulled rickshaws. The scenic ride to Matheran from Neral is a leisurely journey through forests, providing a perfect introduction to this unique destination.

Echoes of the British Era:

Matheran's history dates back to the British era, and remnants of that time are evident in the architecture and ambiance. Explore colonial-era bungalows, churches, and the serene Charlotte Lake, named after the British wife of Governor Lord Elphinstone.

Mesmerizing Sunset Points:

Matheran boasts several vantage points that offer breathtaking views of the sunrise and sunset. Louisa Point, Porcupine Point, and Panorama Point are among the favorites. Don't forget your camera to capture the fiery hues painting the sky.

Adventure Awaits:

For adventurous souls, Matheran offers trekking trails that lead you through dense forests and rocky terrain. The trail to the enchanting One Tree Hill Point is a popular choice for trekkers. It rewards you with panoramic views and a sense of accomplishment.

Soak Up the Forest Vibes:

Matheran is a lush, forested hill station, and nature enthusiasts will find solace in its green embrace. Take leisurely walks along the well-marked forest trails, listen to the symphony of birds, and revel in the fragrance of the woods.

A Culinary Exploration:

While in Matheran, savor local delicacies like vada pav, bhel puri, and chikki (a sweet made of jaggery and nuts) from the numerous street food stalls. Don't miss the opportunity to enjoy hot masala chai at one of the charming tea stalls.

The Pisarnath Temple:

Perched on a hill, the Pisarnath Temple is a spiritual haven. The tranquil surroundings and the panoramic view from the temple make it an ideal spot for introspection and relaxation.

Chug Along the Miniature Railway:

Matheran's toy train, a UNESCO World Heritage site, is an engineering marvel and an essential part of the hill station's charm. The toy train chugs through dense forests and narrow tracks, providing scenic vistas at every turn.

Shop for Local Handicrafts:

Matheran offers a variety of handicrafts and souvenirs. Shop for leather goods, Kolhapuri chappals (sandals), and local honey and chikki. These make for excellent keepsakes or gifts to take home.

Reconnect with Simplicity:

Matheran is a place where time slows down, and the simple pleasures of life take center stage. Spend your days reading a book in a hammock, having a picnic by the lake, or just gazing at the starlit sky with your loved ones.

The Prabal Fort Adventure:

If you're up for a bit of a hike, consider trekking to Prabal Fort, a historic site that offers panoramic views of the surrounding hills. The trek can be challenging, but the views from the top are truly rewarding.

Take a Stroll on the Matheran-Market Road:

The Matheran-Market Road is the main street of the hill station, lined with shops and eateries. Take a leisurely stroll, sample local snacks, and shop for souvenirs and handicrafts.

Great place to go for a walk. We went there at night and were able to enjoy the calm weather and the stars. About a 15-20 minutes walk from the hotel Usha escort. I am sure it will be equally beautiful in the daytime as well.

Beautiful place, best in monsoon season. Don't forget to take the trail via monkey point to Alexandra Point. As for now the zip line is closed due to legal issues, it is not scheduled to restart anytime this year as there are a lot of preliminary government regulations to be addressed.
