Kamandurg Trek Overview

The fort does not have any fortifications, despite the presence of signals in the local area. On the western side of the summit, there is a small water tank drilled out of the soil. The summit offers stunning views of Vasai Creek and the surrounding area.

From the summit, you can also see mangrove-covered islands and salt pans by the creek. Tungareshwar hills contribute to the picturesque landscape surrounding the castle. From the ground, the summit seems to be two peaks divided by a single small pole. The summit's circular form gives the appearance of a volcano.

Stone carving discovered in the region suggests that this was a significant location since ancient times. Several water tanks discovered on the way and at the top were installed by the Maratha during 1739, when the forces fighting with the Portuguese ordered the building of several water tanks in the region to the Peshwa headquarters in Pune.

Itinerary For Kamandurg Trek

1

Day 1 - Devkhuni To Kamandurg (2100 Ft)

Kamandurg

Explore Kamandurg trek

  • The trail begins in Devkhudi, a small village of 8 – 10 huts. Continue in the direction of the fort, keeping Devkhudi village to your right.
  • The trail runs across a big river that is dry in the summer but a gushing stream during the monsoons. After about 5 – 10 minutes on the mud route, you can come to a point where one trail leads to the left and the other leads to the right.
  • Continue down the trail on your left. Another 5 minutes into the climb, you'll come across a hand pump on the right. Continue on the track for a few minutes before you see a single hut on your left. Just before the hut, there is a paywat (foot trail) that leads to the right into the trees. Continue on the level-headed footpath that leads into the park.
  • Continue on the track for another 10-15 minutes before it begins to steadily climb up. After about 25 minutes, the trail begins to narrow as it goes through the Karvy shrubs on both sides. The Karvy has been felled to make room for the hikers/villagers. Continue for another 20–25 minutes through the Karvy trees.
  • Continue on the trail that eventually ascends until you reach an opening. It takes around 1 hour 45 minutes to get here from Devkhuni village. The view of Vasai Creek, Tungareshwar National Park, and the surrounding area is spectacular.
  • There are several trees near the water tank that can provide shade from the sun. Once you've rested for a while, you should take the same path back down. When descending, you must exercise extreme caution on the rock and scree areas. It takes about 1.5 – 2 hours to descend.
